Water Is Essential
The desert climate is dry, and both people and pets can become dehydrated much faster than expected. Always bring more water than you think you’ll need and offer it frequently throughout the day. A collapsible water bowl is a simple item that can make a big difference on the trail.
Protect Your Dog’s Paws
Moab’s slickrock and sandy terrain can become extremely hot, especially during the summer months. Before setting out, check the ground temperature with your hand. If it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for your dog’s paws. Morning and evening adventures are often the most comfortable times for both pets and people.
Keep Pets Leashed
The backcountry may seem wide open, but keeping your dog on a leash helps protect wildlife, other visitors, and your pet. Many trails feature cliffs, steep drop-offs, and rugged terrain that can become dangerous if a dog wanders too far.
