Summer is a great time for outdoor recreation, especially for those with dogs. Going hiking, or even jeeping with dogs can be a lot of fun, and a wonderful way to get them some exercise. However, outdoor recreation with dogs in the summer still has its own unique difficulties, so it is important to be as prepared as possible in order to keep you and your beloved pet safe. Here are just a few tips to keep in mind when doing any kind of outdoor recreation with your dog:
1. Bring plenty of water. This is vital in the summer, when temperatures can get dangerously hot. Unlike humans, dogs won’t be able to carry a bottle and drink whenever they want. As a result, stopping and giving your dog water is important to keep them comfortable, healthy, and happy while in the outdoors.
2. Be careful about going off leash. Going off leash can really allow your dog to get their energy out, but there are some places where it can be dangerous to go off leash. Be careful in areas with ledges or cliffs, as dogs could easily fall off of them.
3. Take rests when needed. Again, this is important for staying comfortable and hydrated, and is the perfect opportunity to drink some water as well. This lets both you and your dog rest and recuperate before heading out onto the trail again.
With these tips, staying safe while exploring the outdoors with your dog should be a bit easier.
