Arches National Park Shuttle vs. Renting a Car: What’s the Best Way to Explore Arches?
Arches National Park is one of the most incredible destinations in the American Southwest. With more than 2,000 natural stone arches, towering sandstone formations, scenic overlooks, and some of the most recognizable landscapes in Utah, it is easy to see why millions of visitors want to experience this remarkable park.
But what if you arrive in Moab without a vehicle? Maybe you flew into Canyonlands Regional Airport, arrived by train, or are staying at a downtown Moab hotel without transportation. How do you get into Arches National Park, and once you are there, how do you get around?
In September 2026, a new option became available with the launch of the Moab–Arches National Park Shuttle. This free shuttle service provides transportation from Moab into Arches National Park and to a couple of the park’s most popular destinations.
It is a welcome addition to the transportation options available in Moab, but is it the best way to experience Arches?
At Canyonlands Jeep & Car Rentals, we have been helping visitors explore Moab and southeastern Utah since 2004. We believe there is no single perfect way to visit Arches. It really depends on how much time you have, what you want to see, and how much freedom you want during your visit.
Let’s take a closer look at the new Arches shuttle, its advantages and limitations, and why renting a car might be a better option for your Moab vacation.
What Is the New Arches National Park Shuttle?
The Moab–Arches Shuttle is a pilot transportation program that began operating September 1, 2026. The program is a partnership involving Grand County, the National Park Service, and the Utah Department of Transportation.
The goal is relatively simple: reduce vehicle congestion inside Arches National Park while giving visitors another option for getting into the park without needing their own transportation.
The shuttle operates between several locations in Moab and the Arches National Park Visitor Center. From there, passengers can transfer to another shuttle that serves two of the park’s most popular destinations.
The best part? The shuttle itself is free.
Visitors still need a valid National Park entrance pass, but there is no additional charge to ride the shuttle.
The pilot’s first season runs through October 31, 2026, with service scheduled to resume March 1, 2027, and continue through June 30, 2027.
Whether the shuttle becomes a permanent transportation option will depend on the results of the pilot program and future funding decisions.

Where Does the Arches Shuttle Go?
This is probably the most important question visitors should ask before deciding whether to use the shuttle.
The shuttle offers transportation to two popular sightseeing areas within Arches National Park:
Delicate Arch Trailhead: One of Utah’s most famous hikes. The trail to Delicate Arch is approximately 3 miles round trip, with about 480 feet of elevation gain. It is a moderately strenuous hike with exposed sandstone, limited shade, and incredible views.
The Windows Section: This popular area includes North Window, South Window, Turret Arch, and nearby Double Arch. It is a great destination for families and visitors looking for relatively short hikes and spectacular scenery.
Both are excellent places to visit, and for someone with limited time, these two destinations provide a memorable introduction to Arches National Park.
However, there is a significant limitation.
The shuttle does not take you to most of the other popular destinations within Arches National Park.
For example, if you want to visit Devils Garden, hike to Landscape Arch, explore Sand Dune Arch, stop at Balanced Rock, photograph Park Avenue, or visit the Fiery Furnace, you will need another way to get there.
The shuttle also does not operate as a hop-on, hop-off sightseeing tour along the entire scenic drive.
This is where having your own rental car becomes a major advantage.
The Benefits of Taking the Arches Shuttle
We think there are several legitimate reasons visitors might choose the shuttle.
1. It Is Free
For budget-conscious travelers, the price is certainly attractive. If you are staying in downtown Moab and only want to visit Delicate Arch or the Windows, the shuttle provides transportation without the expense of renting a vehicle.
You will still need to purchase your park entrance pass, but the transportation itself is free.
2. You Don’t Have to Worry About Parking
Anyone who has visited Arches during a busy spring or fall weekend knows that parking can be challenging.
Popular trailheads such as Delicate Arch and the Windows can fill up, especially during the middle of the day.
The shuttle eliminates the need to find a parking spot at these locations, which can be a real benefit during busy visitation periods.
3. It Provides Another Way to Visit the Park
Not everyone visiting Moab arrives with a vehicle.
Some visitors fly into the area, travel by train, or simply prefer not to drive during their vacation.
The shuttle gives these visitors another option for accessing a few of the park’s most recognizable attractions.
4. It Could Help Reduce Congestion
Arches National Park has experienced significant visitation growth over the years. During peak periods, traffic congestion and limited parking have become major challenges.
A successful shuttle program could help reduce some vehicle trips into the park, especially at heavily visited trailheads.
As a local Moab business, we support efforts that improve the visitor experience while protecting the natural resources that make this area so special.
The Limitations of the Arches National Park Shuttle
While the shuttle is a great option for certain visitors, there are some important limitations to consider.
1. You Can Only Visit a Small Portion of Arches
Arches National Park is much more than Delicate Arch and the Windows.
The scenic drive through the park is approximately 18 miles one way from the entrance area to Devils Garden, with numerous overlooks, hiking trails, and interesting formations along the way.
Some of our favorite stops include:
Park Avenue and Courthouse Towers
Balanced Rock
The Garden of Eden
Double Arch
Sand Dune Arch
Skyline Arch
Landscape Arch and Devils Garden
With a rental car, you can stop at these destinations, spend as much or as little time as you want, and discover some of the quieter areas of the park.
The shuttle simply does not offer that same level of access.
2. You Are Limited by the Shuttle Schedule
The shuttle generally operates during daytime hours, with the last scheduled departure from the Delicate Arch trailhead at 4:05 p.m.
That means visitors need to carefully plan their hikes and allow enough time to return to the shuttle stop.
This is especially important when hiking to Delicate Arch, where the round-trip hike can take two to three hours or longer, depending on your pace and how much time you spend enjoying the scenery.
If you miss the last shuttle, you could find yourself without transportation back to Moab.
With a rental car, you have much more flexibility.
Want to spend an extra hour photographing the landscape? No problem.
Want to stop for a picnic or explore another trail? You can.
Want to change your plans because the weather looks better somewhere else? You have that option too.
3. Sunrise, Sunset, and Stargazing Are Difficult
Some of the most beautiful times to experience Arches National Park are early in the morning and late in the evening.
Sunrise brings beautiful light across the red sandstone formations, cooler temperatures, and often fewer visitors.
Sunset is equally spectacular, especially at locations such as Delicate Arch, Balanced Rock, and the Windows.
Arches is also designated as an International Dark Sky Park, making it an incredible destination for stargazing and nighttime photography.
Unfortunately, the shuttle’s daytime operating schedule does not accommodate sunrise or nighttime visits, and its afternoon return schedule limits sunset opportunities.
With a rental car, you can visit the park at the times that work best for you.
4. Transfers and Waiting Can Take Away From Your Day
Visitors traveling from Moab must first take the shuttle to the Arches Visitor Center, then transfer to the shuttle serving the trailheads.
Shuttles generally operate every 30 minutes between Moab and the park, with more frequent service inside Arches.
While this system provides convenient access to certain destinations, transfers and waiting can add time to your day.
If you only have one day to explore Arches, spending that time hiking, sightseeing, and enjoying the park rather than waiting for transportation may be a priority.
Why Renting a Car in Moab Might Be the Better Option
At Canyonlands Jeep & Car Rentals, we regularly work with visitors who arrive in Moab without transportation.
One of the things we always encourage visitors to consider is how much they want to see during their stay.
Moab is not a destination where everything is within walking distance. Arches National Park is only a few miles north of town, but many of the area’s best attractions are spread across a large region.
Having your own vehicle opens up a lot more possibilities.
Explore Arches at Your Own Pace
With a rental car, you can create your own itinerary.
You might start your morning at Park Avenue, continue to Balanced Rock, explore the Windows, hike to Delicate Arch, and finish the day at Devils Garden.
Or you might decide to take things slowly, stopping at scenic overlooks and enjoying shorter hikes along the way.
There is no shuttle schedule to follow, and you are not limited to designated shuttle stops.
Visit More Than One National Park
One of the biggest advantages of renting a car in Moab is the opportunity to explore beyond Arches.
Moab is surrounded by incredible public lands, including Canyonlands National Park, Dead Horse Point State Park, and numerous scenic drives.
With a rental car, you can spend one day exploring Arches and another visiting the Island in the Sky District of Canyonlands National Park.
You can also visit Dead Horse Point State Park, enjoy the views along Highway 128 beside the Colorado River, or explore the scenic drive toward Castle Valley.
These are experiences the Arches shuttle does not provide.
Experience Moab Beyond the National Parks
There is much more to Moab than its two national parks.
Some of our favorite experiences include driving along the Colorado River, exploring the scenic roads toward the La Sal Mountains, visiting local restaurants, and enjoying the incredible scenery throughout southeastern Utah.
Having your own transportation makes it easier to discover these places and enjoy everything the region has to offer.
Make the Most of Your Time in Moab
For many visitors, a trip to Moab is something they have been planning for months or even years.
Whether you have two days or an entire week, you probably want to make the most of your time here.
A rental car allows you to spend more time exploring and less time coordinating transportation.
You can start early, stay late, change your itinerary, and visit destinations that would otherwise be difficult to reach.
How Much Does It Cost to Rent a Car in Moab?
Renting a car may be more affordable than you think.
At Canyonlands Jeep & Car Rentals, our compact car rentals start at $85 per day, subject to availability and current pricing.
Our car rentals include:
A full 24-hour rental period
250 included miles per day
Several vehicle categories to accommodate different group sizes
Local assistance from a Moab-based rental company
If you are traveling as a couple, family, or small group, sharing the cost of a rental vehicle can make having your own transportation a practical option.
For example, a compact rental car starting at $85 per day works out to approximately $21.25 per person for a group of four, before taxes, fees, and fuel.
And unlike the shuttle, your rental vehicle can take you beyond Arches National Park.

What About Renting a Jeep Instead?
If you want to take your Moab experience to another level, renting a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon might be the perfect option.
While you do not need a Jeep to explore the paved roads of Arches National Park, a Jeep opens up opportunities to experience some of the incredible backcountry roads surrounding Moab.
Imagine spending the morning exploring Arches National Park and the afternoon driving an approved scenic backcountry route through the red rocks.
At Canyonlands Jeep & Car Rentals, we have been helping visitors experience Moab since 2004. Our Jeep rentals are designed for visitors who want to enjoy both the national parks and the surrounding backcountry.

Remember that off-road driving is prohibited within Arches National Park, and rental Jeeps must remain on designated routes approved by the rental company.
So, Should You Take the Arches Shuttle or Rent a Car?
We think both options have their place.
The Arches shuttle might be the best choice if:
You are staying in downtown Moab without a vehicle.
You only want to visit Delicate Arch or the Windows.
You are comfortable following a transportation schedule.
You want to avoid finding parking at busy trailheads.
You are visiting during the shuttle’s operating season.
Renting a car might be the better choice if:
You want to explore all of Arches National Park.
You want to visit Devils Garden, Landscape Arch, and other destinations not served by the shuttle.
You enjoy sunrise, sunset, or nighttime photography.
You want the freedom to explore at your own pace.
You plan to visit Canyonlands National Park, Dead Horse Point, or other attractions around Moab.
You are traveling with family or friends and want a flexible itinerary.
You are visiting when the shuttle is not operating.
Our Recommendation: Choose the Option That Fits Your Adventure
We are excited to see new transportation options being developed for visitors to Moab and Arches National Park.
The Arches shuttle is a positive step toward giving visitors more choices, and it could help address some of the congestion challenges inside the park.
But we also believe that part of what makes visiting Moab so special is the freedom to explore.
Some of the best experiences happen when you pull over at an unexpected scenic overlook, discover a trail you didn’t know existed, or decide to stay a little longer because the sunset is just too good to leave.
The shuttle can get you to a couple of the park’s highlights. Having your own vehicle allows you to discover so much more.
If you are planning a trip to Moab and will not have your own transportation, we invite you to explore the rental options available at Canyonlands Jeep & Car Rentals.
Whether you need an affordable compact car for a day in Arches, a larger vehicle for the family, or a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon for a backcountry adventure, we are here to help you make the most of your visit.
Experience Moab on your own schedule.
